This DIY came about when I bought a cheap set of drawers for my dog's stuff. I wanted the drawers to stand out and represent him, so I painted them white and decorated with black spots etc.
You could use this idea for other furniture pieces and for people, not just dogs. It would be a great item for someone who is dalmatian mad, like me!
Let's get on with the DIY!
What you will need
- Wooden Furniture/drawers
- Sandpaper (coarse)
- Wood primer spray
- White spray paint that can be used on wood (I used two cans)
- Black acrylic paint
- Paint palette
- Stencils
- Sponge
- Bin bag
- Sellotape
The first part is done outside. Using a bin bag and sellotape, create a surface outside which you spray paint on. Place the drawers/other wooden furniture on the surface and sand with the coarse sandpaper. Then wipe down with a dry cloth.
Then remove the drawers. Spray the white primer on the wooden drawers frame and fronts of the drawers. Leave to dry for stated amount of time on the spray can.
Once dry, spray the frame and drawer fronts with the white spray paint. This will take a few layers, but remember to leave drying time between each coat. For me, this took nearly two full cans of the spray paint. Once dry, you can take it inside. I left it overnight before I did anything else to it.
Then next day, I created stencils for the drawers and used a scalpel/cutting mat to cut them out. I did labels for the drawers, a paw print for the top and a variation of dalmatian spots. For the drawer fronts, I placed the stencil on it and sponged black acrylic paint on it, making sure I didn't go over the edge.
I did the same process for the paw print and for the spots. I used different shapes and combinations for the spots so that it looked like a dalmatian print. I covered both sides and put a few on the top & front. I left the back blank as it was going against a wall, so no one would see the back.
And that's it! You can change certain details of this DIY for your own preferences. Add as many or as little spots, use the same drawer labels or name the drawers for your needs and you can use this idea for a human instead of for dog items!
Anyway, that's it for this post.
Hope you enjoyed this DIY.
