Lifestyle Thursday - How to: Organise your University life

Being organised is essential while you are at university. No matter what course you are on, you will need to be able to manage deadlines, fit in time for food shopping/cleaning accomodation and still socialise with friends/flatmates.
So here are my top tips for organising your new uni life.

My first tip is to have a diary and a calendar, plus using your phone calendar, to keep on top of your deadlines. Deadlines at university level are extrememly important, as you loose marks if you hand in a piece of work late, even if it is 1 minute after the set time. Everytime you are given a deadline, put it in your phone calendar, diary and normal calendar. I also used to place a reminder of the deadline 1 week before it was due, in my phone, so that I could make sure it was finished etc.

My next tip is to set aside a full day, ie a day you have no lectures, to do all your shopping/cleaning/clothes washing. It's best if you can go with someone else to do food shopping and clothes washing, as you could end up splitting the costs (could end up being cheaper). I used to go food shopping & do my washing with a flatmate, which meant that we both didn't buy the same foods (which would go off before being finished, if we purchased separately) and we could share washing machines (as I never had enough to fill two machines on my own, 1 white wash/1 coloured wash). Getting all of my 'household chores' out of the way meant that I had more time in the week to get my work done and socialise. The cleaning part of the day is to do a deep clean of kitchen/hallway/bedroom/bathroom, as I would basically clean the flat each night, with my flatmates.

Another tip is to make sure you write down everything you need to do for each deadline. This may seem simple but it is effective. Don't just take silly little notes on scraps of paper,as you will lose them. Have a tiny a5 notebook and note down what you need to do straight away, or you will forget what work you have to do. I then write it on a whiteboard/chalkboard/pin a note on a pinboard, in my room. This way I can clearly see what needs to be done for each deadline, as you will have more than one deadline at a time.

My final tip is to understand when you work best. Getting to know what time of day is your most productive will help you work better. Don't try to force yourself to work, if you don't have to. Unless, you work better under pressure obviously. I normally work better in the evening/throughout the night, so I would do most of my work then. But if you work better in the daytime/mornings, try to get your work done then (if you are not in lectures). Also, work out where you work better. I found that I work better in my own environment with others around me, so I would spend most nights in my accomodation with my flatmates, doing work. However, some people would find that distracting. Some people find that working in the university library on their own, suits them more. It's all about finding what works with you.

And those are my tips for organising your university life.
Do you guys have any tips?
