Timeless Classics vs. Fashion Statements

Today, I read this article on MATCHESFASHION.com and it got me thinking about my own wardrobe/style.

'Do you choose forever clothes or snap up the latest standout pieces?'
That's the slogan for the article. It got me wondering if I choose statement pieces more or if I prefer to buy the latest trends.
Personally, I think that I have a mixture of statement pieces and pieces that probably won't stand the test of time. Every half a year, I tend to have bin-bags full of clothes that just aren't in trend anymore or I just don't like anymore, so maybe I have more trend-based pieces than I realised. However, is this a bad thing? As Vogue china's New York editor, Dora Fung, said in the article, as long as you have some statement pieces, buying pieces that are only on trend for a few months isn't wrong.
Fashion is meant to be fun and experimental. Most catwalk shows have items on them that will be in style that season and not the next! If you were meant to wear timeless classics all the time, then we wouldn't have trend forecasters, mad experimental designers or fashion weeks! Yes, timeless classics have their place in the fashion world, but why should you only buy them? Maybe you should splash out on the bright blue bag rather than the traditional black one? Or the bright pink heels instead of the nude ones?

On the other hand, if I could afford to buy the more expensive timeless classics like Stella McCartney LBD then I probably would. I see why women buy expensive pieces that will be in style year after year but I also can see why women buy the random pieces that will only be in style for a season or two. Both have their place in the fashion industry and in my wardrobe. Classic designer pieces are worth spending money on. My black DKNY handbag is used daily and still looks as amazing as the first day I bought it. However, if you would rather buy the bright red lips clutch by Lulu Guinness, then do it!
In my wardrobe, I have the basic classics; a black blazer, jeans, plain white tops, plain black tops, black midi skirt and my black leather DKNY bag etc, along with current trend pieces; crop tops, printed pencil skirts, studs, gold chains and bright coloured accessories etc. Personally, I like trying out the latest trends and mixing them with classics, which makes your wardrobe personal to you. As long as what you're wearing suits you and makes you feel comfortable, what should it matter if it is on trend or not.
I will admit that seeing new-season, head-turning pieces get my heart racing like they do to Dora Fung but so do well-made classic pieces. Just fashion gets my heart racing enough for me to open my purse. I think it shocks my friends how much I would spend on an item of clothing or accessory, even if I know that I will only wear it a few times! I live and breathe fashion so I can see why both arguments of this article are valid. Really, it depends on what kind of person you are and what you like to wear.

In the end, to me, both trend-worthy and classic pieces are worthy to be in my wardrobe. I may be wasting my money on some trends but to me, fashion is about experimenting! As long as you are confident and happy with what you are wearing, why should it matter if it is a timeless piece or something that you will look back at and think 'What am I WEARING?'.

What about you? Would you prefer to buy/wear timeless classics, trend-worthy experimental pieces or both?
